Threads

Prev Next

Threads help organize conversations and allow users to discuss specific topics without cluttering the main chat. They make it easier to follow, find, and resume discussions by grouping related messages.

Threads can exist in Teams, Channels, Discussions, or Direct Messages, and are identified by the thread icon .

Create a new thread

You can start a new thread when replying to any message. To create a thread on web browser or desktop:

  1. Hover over the message you want to reply to.

  2. Click the thread icon .  A side panel opens for the thread.

  3. Type your reply in the message box.

    • To post your response in both the thread and the main channel, select Also send to channel.

  4. Send your message when ready.

To close the thread view, click the X (close) icon on the thread header.

To create a thread in the mobile app:

  1. Long-press the message you want to reply to.

  2. Tap Reply in thread and type your reply in the message box.

    • To send your reply to both the thread and the main channel, enable the Also send to channel option below your message.

  3. Tap Send once you’re done.

View threads in a room

To view all threads within a room:

  1. Open the desired room or channel.

  2. Click the threads icon on the room’s top menu bar. The Threads panel will open, displaying all threaded messages in that room.

  3. Use the search bar at the top to find specific messages within threads.

  4. To narrow your view, use the filter menu on the right:

    • All: Displays every thread in the room.

    • Following: Shows only the threads you’re following (threads where you’ve replied or manually followed).

    • Unread: Lists threads that contain unread messages.

From this panel, you can open any thread to view or reply directly, follow or unfollow it, and keep your discussions organized.

Load threads in long reply

This feature is available since Rocket.Chat 8.8.0.

When you open a thread, the Threads panel loads an initial set of replies. As you scroll toward older or newer replies, Rocket.Chat automatically loads more.

This allows you to navigate long threads without waiting for every reply to load at once. You can load additional replies by scrolling normally or dragging the panel’s scrollbar.

Enable threads

Threads are enabled by default. To enable or disable them as a workspace administrator:

  1. Go to Manage → Workspace → Settings.

  2. Select Threads and turn Enable on or off.

  3. Save your changes.

Paged reply loading works automatically when Threads are enabled. It does not have a separate setting.

Open a thread at a specific reply

When you open a reply permalink or select Jump to message in search results, Rocket.Chat opens the thread and scrolls to the selected reply.

Scroll up to view earlier replies or down to view later replies. Additional replies load automatically as you scroll.

View a thread whose first message was deleted

If the first message of a thread is deleted, the thread remains available while it still contains replies. The Threads list displays Message removed instead of an empty entry.

Open the thread to view its remaining replies.

Deleting the first message of a thread does not delete its existing replies. Users with the required permission can delete the replies individually. Workspace retention policies may also remove thread messages automatically; contact your workspace administrator for details.

Expand and collapse a thread

Threads appear on the right side of the room where they were created. You can expand or collapse them depending on how much screen space you need.

  • To expand a thread, click the expand icon on the thread header.

  • To collapse a thread, click the collapse icon .

Follow a thread

Following a thread lets you receive notifications for new replies within it. By default, you automatically follow any thread you participate in.

To follow or unfollow a thread:

  1. Open the thread.

  2. Click the bell icon on the thread header to toggle notifications on or off.
