Manage Rooms

Rocket.Chat rooms are where communications with other users occur. Rocket.Chat provides different room types for different collaboration purposes. To learn about the room types and various options for each, refer to the Collaborate Using Rooms section.

This section guides you through various management options for rooms in Rocket.Chat, such as viewing room details, editing, and deleting rooms.

To access the room administration menu, go to Administration > Workspace > Rooms. It displays all the rooms in your workspace alongside the following details:

  • Name: The name of the room.

  • Type: The category or type of the room, such as channels, DMs, and Omnichannel rooms.

  • Users: The total number of users in the room.

  • Messages: The total number of messages in the room.

  • Default: Indicates whether the room is set as default.

  • Featured: Indicates whether the room is set as featured.

  • Created at: Displays the date of the room creation.

You can search for rooms using the search bar and filter by room type using the drop-down menu next to the search bar.

Edit room details

To view or update a room, follow these steps:

1. Go to Administration > Workspace > Rooms.

2. Click on the room you want to update.

3. Update any of the following fields:

Field

Description

Avatar

Upload or change the room's avatar.

Name

Edit the room's name.

Owner

You can only view the current room owner here. To assign a new room owner, visit Update Room members or View and assign users to roles. If no room owner exists, this field is not displayed.

Description

Provide or update a description of the room.

Announcement

Add an announcement to be displayed as a top banner in the room.

Topic

Set or update the room's topic.

Private

Update the room's privacy setting. Only invited members can access a private channel.

Read-only

Enable this option to mark the room as read-only. Only authorized users can send new messages to the room.

Favorite

Mark the room as a favorite.

Default

Set the room as a default channel for all new users to join automatically.

Archived

Enable this option to archive the room. Nobody can post messages on an archived channel; a channel search will not find that channel. Admins can find archived channels using the Directory.

Featured

Enable this option to mark a room as featured. Featured rooms are displayed at the top of the workspace’s Directory page. You can use this feature to highlight important rooms that users should join.

4. Click Save to apply the changes.

Delete room

To delete a room,

  • Search and click on the room you want to delete.

  • Click Delete.

  • Click Yes, delete to confirm.

Discussions and threads

By default, discussions and threads are enabled in workspaces. If you don’t want to use any of these, you have the option to disable them.

  • To disable discussions, go to Administration > Workspace > Settings > Discussion.

  • To disable threads, go to Administration > Workspace > Settings > Threads.
