Access Your Workspace as Admin

Prev Next

After your Rocket.Chat workspace is deployed, sign in as an administrator to set it up. This document shows you how to reach your workspace from a web browser, the desktop app, or the mobile app, and how to open workspace administration on each one.

Before you begin

You need:

Find your workspace URL

Deployment

Where to find the URL

Self-managed, local test

http://localhost:3000, unless you changed the port during deployment.

Self-managed, server

The domain you configured during deployment, for example https://chat.example.com.

Cloud-hosted

Sign in to your Rocket.Chat Cloud account and select Workspaces. The Domain column shows the URL. By default it's your-workspace.rocket.chat, or your own domain if you set up a custom domain.

On a new self-managed workspace, the first person to open the URL and complete the setup wizard becomes the admin. Open the URL yourself right after deployment, and don't share it until setup is complete.

Sign in and open workspace administration

Choose the device you're using.

  1. Open a supported web browser.

  2. Enter your workspace URL in the address bar and press Enter.

  3. Continue based on what you see:

    • Setup wizard: This is a new self-managed workspace. Follow Complete the Setup Wizard to create your admin account.

    • Login screen: Enter your admin username or email and your password, then click Login.

Open workspace administration

  1. In the top navigation bar, click the Manage icon (gear).

  2. Select Workspace.

The Workspace page opens. From here, you can reach all administration areas, such as Users, Settings, and Subscription.

If the Sidebar Rail feature preview is turned on, the Manage icon is at the bottom of the left rail instead of the top navigation bar.

  1. Download and install the Rocket.Chat desktop app for your operating system.

  2. Open the app.

  3. Enter your workspace URL and click Connect.

The desktop app shows the same administration screens as the web browser.

To connect another workspace, click the plus (+) icon next to the current workspace tab. To change how connected workspaces are displayed, see Desktop App Configuration settings.

The mobile app doesn't include the setup wizard. On a new self-managed workspace, complete the setup wizard in a web browser or the desktop app before you sign in from the mobile app.

  1. Download and install the Rocket.Chat app for iOS or Android.

  2. Open the app and tap Join a workspace.

  3. Enter your workspace URL and tap Connect.

  4. Tap Login, then enter your admin username or email and your password.

Open workspace administration

  1. Tap the Menu icon (☰) in the top-left corner to open the sidebar.

  2. Tap Admin panel.

The Workspace page of workspace administration opens inside the app. Admin panel appears only if your role has at least one of these permissions: view-statistics, view-room-administration, view-user-administration, or view-privileged-setting. The admin role has all of them by default.

What happens on first sign-in

What you see the first time you open your workspace depends on how it was deployed:

  • Self-managed: The setup wizard opens automatically, and it stays until an admin completes it. In the wizard, you create the admin account, enter your organization details, and register the workspace. See the Complete the Setup Wizard article for more details.

  • Cloud-hosted: Rocket.Chat registers the workspace and applies your plan's license before handing it over to you. See the Hosting FAQ article for more details.

If you can’t sign in

  • Forgot your password: Click Forgot your password? on the login screen. The reset email only arrives if email is configured for your workspace. Email is pre-configured on cloud-hosted workspaces. On self-managed workspaces, it isn't configured yet at this stage of setup.

  • Locked out of a self-managed workspace with no other admin: Follow Restoring an Admin User to reset the admin password directly in the database.

  • The URL doesn't load: Check that the server is running and that the URL, including the port, matches your deployment.
