Room Roles

Room roles define what members can do within a specific room, including Channels, Teams, and Discussions.

Room roles apply only within the room where they are assigned and do not affect workspace-wide permissions. Each role grants a defined set of room-scoped permissions.

Available room roles

By default, Rocket.Chat provides the following room roles:

  • Owner: Has full control of the room, including managing members, editing room settings, and deleting the room.

  • Moderator: Helps maintain order in the room. Can delete messages, remove users, and pin messages.

  • Leader: Assists with room management, including managing members and updating room details.

Custom room roles are available only on the Enterprise plan. See Custom Roles for more information.

Assign room roles

Roles can only be assigned to users who are already members of the room.

TTo assign a role:

  1. Open the desired room and click the Members icon in the room menu bar.

  2. Select the user.

  3. Open the kebab menu next to their name.

  4. Click Set as <role>.

Notes:

  • By default, only room Owners can assign roles. This behavior may vary depending on workspace permission settings.

  • A user can have multiple roles within the same room.

Remove a room role

Room roles can be revoked if they are no longer needed.

To remove a role:

  1. Open the desired room.

  2. Click the Members icon.

  3. Select the user.

  4. Open the kebab menu next to their name.

  5. Click Remove as <role>.
